The End of Choreography @ LimaZulu

For this exhibition at LimaZulu I present a series of video works from 2012-2013 that extend representations of dance into the visual arts. The works explore, among others, notions of authorship, objecthood, reconstruction and spectatorship in the expanded field of choreography.

Hamish and Martine are dance artists with a shared love of numbers and simple stylised movement.

Meeting Place is a duet which plays with unfolding a visual representation of an algorithmic formula.

Mtg Place is a narrower version of the piece adapted to fit the Hotel Elephant Gallery for this evening.

After the Future: A Homage to Bifo (Live Performance)

After the Future: A Homage to Bifo is a performed talk in which a performer copies (without prior rehearsal) words and movements from a video which shows Franco ‘Bifo’ Berardi explaining key concepts from his book After the Future (2011). The performance asks where meaning resides - in the body, in the voice, in gestures, in words, in spoken or written language, in movement language, in languages of the body. Furthermore, the performance questions how the act of copying opens up space for multiple interpretation, association and agency for an audience, and how this impacts on the way meaning is made and un-made in performance.

Contact and exchange of artists and teachers between the US and UK during the 1970s and 1980s led to explorations by British-based dance artists of new ways of moving, particularly ones that encouraged a focus on sensitivity to somatic processes. These included (but were not restricted to) contact improvisation, release-based methods of movement exploration, body mind centering, the Alexander technique, Tai Chi, and Aikido. This talk, the last of three at different London venues during June, will start with a historical introduction by Ramsay Burt, from De Montfort University, who will contextualise British new dance and the developing interest in these somatic practices during the period. It will be followed by a roundtable discussion chaired by choreographer Jonathan Burrows which will consider the different ways in which these explorations informed the work of British-based dancers and their practices. The recently published collection ‘The Body Eclectic’ considers ways in which professional dancers in the US have embraced an eclectic diversity of different approaches to their training. To what extent and in what ways was this also happening in Britain in the 1970s and 1980s, and if so what if anything is different about the way the approaches are being explored by British-based dancers today?

This is the last of three talks in this series will take place at Siobhan Davies Studios on 1st June, and Lillian Baylis theatre, Sadler’s Wells on June 7th, each of which will feature different guest speakers and focus on a different aspect of British New Dance.

Academic Summer

As I approach the end of the first year of my PhD, I am 'on tour' with my performance lecture Open Offer for Elbow Room - A Silent Lecture this summer. After an initial presentation at the postgraduate student conference 'Production' in Wolverhampton last week, I will stop at Central School of Speech and Drama this Thursday, 14th July, as part of the 'Authoring Theatre' conference, after which I will meet other postgraduate students at the 'Life Beyond the PhD' conference at Cumberland Lodge (Windsor) in Mid-August and my final stop will be York St John University on Thursday 1 September where I will present/perform at the 'Philosophy & ... ' conference.

I will also be performing in Metrology by Katerina Paramana presented as part of STOFF - Stockholm Fringe Fest 2011 on Friday 26 August.

Detouring with Ania

In September 2010 I took part in DIY 7: Detour – in search of alternatives for de/touring live art work, a professional development opportunity facilitated by Ania Bas at the Live Art Development Agency.I proposed a kind of mash-up project by 'recycling' the movement material from Count Two (a project I had been involved with by Nicola Conibere) and the costume design and concept of my site-specifc performance You Make Me Want To Loose You.
